DR. TSUYOSHI CHITOSE (O-SENSEI)
Tsuyoshi Chitose (千歳 剛直; Okinawan Chinen Gua). Born 18 Oct 1898, Kumochi, Naha, Okinawa. Died 6 Jun 1984, Kumamoto, Japan, age 85. Founder of Chitō-ryū (“thousand-year Tang style”). Maternal grandson of Matsumura Sōkon. Birth name Chinen; he took Tsuyoshi Chitose after moving to Tokyo.
Training from age seven (1905) under Aragaki Seishō, then Chōyū Motobu, Chōtoku Kyan, Hanashiro Chōmo, Kanryō Higaonna, Sanda Chinen — Shuri-te, Tomari-te, Naha-te blended. 1921: karate demonstration for Crown Prince Hirohito in Okinawa. 1922: Tokyo; assisted Gichin Funakoshi’s Yotsuya dōjō (Seisan, Bassai, kumite). 1931: assisted Masatoshi Nakayama at Takushoku (later JKA). 1936 Naha meeting that adopted “empty hand” for karate-dō.
1932–end of WWII: Imperial Japanese Army Medical Corps; retired Major. March 1946: opened Yoseikan in Kikuchi-gun, Kumamoto. Style named Chito-ryu circa 1950. 1958: Jūdan, Zen Okinawa Karate Kobudō Rengō Kai. 1968: Hanshi. 1975: Sōhonbu to Tsuboi, Kumamoto City. Students include Yasuhiro Chitose (2nd Sōke, took the name Tsuyoshi), Masami Tsuruoka, William Dometrich, Henry Slomanski, Mamoru Yamamoto. Canada 1967. After 1984 his son assumed the founder’s name as 2nd Sōke.
Physician: English Chito-Ryu bios call him a medical doctor (Tokyo, often obstetrics/gynecology) and say physiology shaped the style. James M. Hatch, EdD (2020) argues Japanese sources do not support a university medical certification and that “Dr.” in English is overstated. This page records both. Do not flatten. He is O-Sensei either way.
SAGAN / FLATLAND — THE METHOD
Is “Flatlandia” Sagan? No. Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions is Edwin Abbott Abbott, London schoolmaster, 1884. Flatlandia is a later film (Michele Emmer, 1982) of Abbott. The clip that was instrumental here is Carl Sagan, Cosmos S1E10 “The Edge of Forever” (1980). Sagan names Abbott on camera: a land of squares, circles, triangles. Apple through the plane. Then the cube’s shadow on paper. Then the tesseract: he cannot show a 4-cube because we are trapped in three dimensions; he can show its 3-D shadow — two nested cubes, vertices joined. “That is the penalty of projection.”
That is the method of this site. Integers on paper (2701, 6328, 74.16 KiB) are the shadow. They are real. They are not the cube. Worship the square and you miss the object. Throw the square away and you have nothing to measure. Sagan taught the staircase. Abbott wrote Flatland. Gibson benches the shadow. Full stack: registers.html.

In memory of Sensei Warren "Po" Pochinski (1935–2022). Green Beret. 4th dan from Chitose. 312 nights. You taught warriors to fight and to heal. The Life-Saving Fist lives in everyone who trained under you. Rest in peace, Po.
In honor of William Domeitrich Hanshi and Barbara Domeitrich. Hanshi founded the US Chito-ryu Federation and brought Chito-Ryu to America. Barbara — the Mother of American Chito-Ryu — trained alongside him and helped build the federation. Their legacy is the unbroken chain we stand in today.
Thanks to Don Schmidt and Sherry Koffel — for carrying the federation forward, for preserving the lineage, and for the friendship and camping trips that kept the brotherhood alive. Don (Renshi, Yoseikan Hombu) and Sherry (Hanshi's daughter, Kyoshi, Vice Chair of USCKF) continue the work. Osu.
